In this guide, you will find the distances from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen to major districts and out-of-city destinations, along with realistic travel time ranges.

Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is located on the Anatolian side, in Pendik. For routes on the Anatolian side, it offers a clear advantage compared with Istanbul Airport.

How does crossing the strait affect travel time?

Every crossing between the European and Anatolian sides is made via one of three routes, and the choice depends on real-time traffic:

Between the two airports

This is the most critical calculation for connecting travel. The distance between Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen is approximately 90 km, and it takes 90-120 minutes in normal traffic. During peak hours, it can take up to 150 minutes.

If you have a connecting flight, it is safest to leave at least 4 hours between the two flights. This covers the road journey, possible traffic, baggage claim, and the new check-in process together.

It would be easy to give a single number, but it would be misleading. The variables that affect travel time are:

• Time of day. 07:00-10:00 in the morning and 17:00-20:00 in the evening are the busiest periods.
• Day of the week. Friday evenings and Sunday returns are significantly busier.
• Weather conditions. Rain means at least a twenty percent increase in travel time.
• Season. In summer, out-of-city routes get busier; in winter, ski routes become crowded.
• Terminal and hotel entrance. Movement inside the airport and waiting in front of the hotel also add to the total time.

For this reason, the safest approach is to plan based on the upper values in the table.

When should you leave to make your flight?

The time you should be at the airport:

• Domestic flights — 2 hours before departure
• International flights — 3 hours before departure
• Peak season and holidays — 3.5 hours before international departures

You should add the travel time and traffic allowance to this. Two examples:

From Taksim to Istanbul Airport, for a 09:00 international flight:

3 hours airport buffer + 1 hour travel + 30 minutes traffic allowance = departure around 04:30.

From Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen, for an 08:00 international flight:

3 hours airport buffer + 45 minutes travel + 30 minutes traffic allowance = departure around 03:45.

At these hours, public transportation runs infrequently, so a pre-booked transfer is practically the only reliable option.
